Ah, but there are some people out there doing interest- ing things! For example: Last Monday, Ringo Starr celebrated his thirty-fifth birthday. At this point, Ringo suspected something was afoot, but it was not until he got home at around seven o'clock that things became obvious — it was a full-scale surprise birthday party given by his lovely lady Nancy Andrews to honor the event.
At this point, after chasing Nancy madly around the house mockingly to scold her for her deception, friends and well-wishers began to show their faces. Sometimes one is fortunate enough to be present at an event that assures itself a permanent place in one's memory — well, for the easily star-struck, it was better than Grauman s Chinese Theater — for the straight-laced trade journalist, it was an evening that stretched on into the dawn of Tuesday morn- ing, but was it worth it!
A list of those in attendance is staggering, but here goes! George Harrison declined an invitation from Mick to play at one of the Forum dates, stating instead that he would "come around to watch. Needless to say, a photo of the world's best known five drummers — Starr, Moon, Keltner, Olsson, and Watts — would have been nice — but let's blame that one on Nancy's strobe! Ringo summed it all up when he was asked, "How does it feel to be one year older?
And, according to Keith Moon, Pete Townshend has completed writing the material for the new Who album. Keith will leave L A. The Who, and The Beatles will always occupy a center position in people's interest.

Never mind the studio Album) we'll anxiously await the Dodger Stadium gig. Congratulations to James in any case — if you haven't heard him before, get tuned in — he's terrific. Right, Artie? Howard Zieff and Ken Lauber have a problem. Agents for the three musicians ha- ven't heard from them and Zieff and Lauber want desperately to have the three coun- try western giants help with the movie score. Guys, if you read this, please call Regina at MGM.
A veritable jamboree, as W. Fields would say. The party, replete with char-broiled steaks and trimmings, live band and horse rides thanks Leffel was jammed, and a fine time was had by all. Nudie we re not allowed to print the last name. Pico with Sheridan Eldridge at the board last Thurs. Behind the glass performing their incredible things were Melanie Clark and Drake McGilberry, among others.

There will be enough music, however, for a soundtrack album. Gary Glitter will write the score Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin - Rodgers And Hammerstein* - Oklahoma!
(Vinyl) and star in a rock pantomime which will open in England before the end of the year. Baez is performing songs from her album, "Diamonds and Rust" and is touring with a new band featuring Jim Gordon, drums.
James Jamerson, bass. David Briggs, keyboards and Danny Ferguson, guitar. Larry Fitzgerald, group manager, disclosed that the injury came during a basketball game that went on after the performance. The opening show of a five night extravaganza was more like a carnival than a concert — until the steel bands ceased their rhythmic freneticism and gave way to a regal introduction befitting the kings of rock. Indeed, if ever a crowd was loose, this was the night.
Admittedly, L. From the outset, the Stones added to the definition of a live rock show a definition that has become their own. The giant points of the neon-inset star stage slowly lowered, the crowd gasped, and Mick Jagger raised his head from the front point like a great primordial sea beast taking some air. The date was Oct. As excited as I was seeing them perform and meeting Jag- ger for the first time after that show, I had to readjust my calculation of their worth after opening night at the Forum.
Jagger, Richard, Watts and Wyman may be just a bit tired of the incessant touring and recording, they nonetheless still have the where- withal! The addition of Ron Wood on guitar, Billy Preston on keyboards and Ollie Brown on percus- sion only served to strengthen the show. Jagger con- tinues to demonstrate the energy and power of a ten-year NFL pro who knows all the right moves. When he got tired of dancing and strutting, he jumped up and down like a tot trying to see over the counter in a candy store.
His bass line is a rock classic and has all the ferocity of a subway colliding with a wooly mam- moth during an earthquake. Yet he re- mains unmoved, a true Stone.
The Billy Preston interval of two songs and a lot of soul dance steps was perfect. The numerous phallic toys all air inflated added to the circus atmosphere as did the five buckets of water Jagger doused the au- dience and himself with just before the encore.
If, in fact, this is the last time the Rolling Stones play in the U. The key to Bresh's appeal lies in a diversity of material, both original tunes and originally arranged tunes of other artists, and in the warmth of his stage presence.
His energy and smile are real and communication with his audience comes naturally. All kidding aside, Tom has been around for long enough to have developed a dis- tinctive and articulate style of picking as evidenced throughout his set, which was backed by the best house band in the country — the Palomino Riders.
Sister Sledge. Kathi, Debbie, Joni and Kim are sis- ters for real. Though each is young in years they are all seasoned performers and what the Starwood audience saw was a refreshing lively show.
Led by the powerful vocals of sister Kathi, who is only 15 years old, Sister Sledge kept the excitment up their en- tire set.
Sister Sledge is similar to other female groups of years past such as the Supremes, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas in that they blend beautifully to have a great sound. The girls displayed great enthusiasm and cheerfulness when on stage and show great potential to improve and become one of the top female groups in show business continued on pg.
A — During recent years the black musical ex- perience has broken into two distinct fragments. In one camp dwells the street rhythm faction; heavy on the bump and grind. For the lounge purists there is the similarly garbed, tightly choreographed Vegas type ensembles a la the Temps. Last week at the Greek, The Spinners an Atlantic veteran showed off in grand style what happens when these two de- cidedly black forces mutate as one.
The Sumitra Lahiri - Andaz-E-Tabassum - Ghazals & Geet (Vinyl, LP), backed by the Greek Theater orchestra, were as a precision machine as their well-choreographed movements on stage proved the perfect adjunct to their brand of pop flavored soul. Whereas a lot of groups fall into the trap of over-polish The Spinners were always in control.
Just enough gloss to be palletable without succumbing to a Vegas whitewash. The Spinners; an emotional experince that would make a blind man talk about seeing again. There was no such thing as warmup fodder this night as Minnie Riperton a most Epic event in Rapscallion In Rabs Canyon - Paul Gonsalves - Tell It The Way It Is!
(CD, Album) all too brief set showed herself to be the complete en- tertainer. Her obvious vocal attributes played a major force in her show as her songs went beyond mere presentation to oc- tave ranges new to human hearing. But her show went further than musical togetherness. This was Minnie Riperton opening night. A mirror back to a time when I was young.
What they are is one of the most unusual fusion bands around — a sensitive com- bination of styles which comes out as a lush, full and rarely abrasive sound highlighted by the excellent vocals of Annie Haslam — a highly romanticized form. Renaissance has a clear idea of what their role is, and they occupy it with a well-founded confidence. Renaissance played two sets without opening act, the first set largely devoted to familiar material. Opening with "Prologue.
An- nie Haslam has a voice of impressive beauty and strength, and with the sup- port of Terry Sullivan on drums, the sound was strong and full. The only difficulty with the Sire group's sound is that it tends toward sameness over a long period of time which can be dulling if one is not com- pletely involved in the delicate mood of the performance.
But, these reservations aside, Renaissance has developed an impressive sound that is finally getting the recognition it deserves. DeLite re- cording artists strode out on stage to make everybody get up to bump and funk. Their show was highlighted by their use of lighting especially the zeal in using powerful strobe lights throughout the entire length of songs.
I continued on pg 16 12 July Sklerov, H. Lloyd Put old blue eyes together with one of the business' most respected producers. Take a classic love ballad written by Gloria Sklerov and Harry Lloyd. The result — Frank's tender phrasing and heart-of-the-music interpretation at its most brilliant. What a production — Five stars! Sinatra smash Fiio: No info, available.
Mellow music for the summer from a consistently hit-bound organization. Flip: No info, available. Gamble, L. Huff Backed by the redoubtable MFSB, the O'Jays score with a powerful, rhythmic performance with the title song from their latest album.
A Bobby Martin arrangement and a Gamble and Huff production frame the song. Watch for strong crossover play. Sigler, A. Anka Paul Anka has been on a streak with his last couple of hit singles and this one should follow the course he has set straight to the top. Again Odia Coates adds spright vocal accompaniment and should help to send this one up the charts. Winter, D. Hartman This track from his recently released solo album features an inspired all-round performance by Edgar as he contributes a dynamic sax solo and a strong vocal.
This muscular ballad should be picking up airplay almost immediately. Flip: No info, availa- ble. The song is delicately arranged with the group's velvet sounding vocal harmonies intertwining with a lush string arrangement.
Strong crossover action is in store. With a strong chorus line sung by Carly and James Taylor, she has turned in one of her best single performances in sometime. Pointer, J. Pointer, R. Pointer, D.
Rubinson Extremely catchy, effective use of syllables and rhythm accentuate this David Rubinson produced disk that should have a lot of the men shook up. The lovely Pointers at their best on a disk that should rocket away from its strong disco roots to a high chart position. Neil, you've got a monster on your hands with this one. Schatz, Revelation A full-scale, well-orchestrated soul production with top chart potential, arranged by T. Super vocal arrangements, instrumentation and strong lead vocal should power this all the way to the top.
Keep 'em dancin' — this is super! King, P. Harris, P. Car- rack, T. Ace looks like something to be excited about — this is a super disk. P Jackson, M. Clark, B. McKnight Funky offering by the group shows strong instrumental interplay by the group. Mayfield Curtis has penned a rolling, emphatic love ballad that displays all the emotion this artist has to offer. Horns, organ and a rhythm and bass track that sets the mood all combine to make this a natural choice for anybody's playlist.
A free-flowing vibrancy and surefire instrumental attack which combines the prodigious talents of the group with a commercial flair should see this one hit the top. Flip- Rain Berry, J. Pewter, A. Wolfson Produced and arranged by Jan Berry. This should follow suit and earn a high chart position. Do it! Armstrong This disk is powerful, laden with all the elements necessary for a rock and roll top 40 smash — hot beat, pounding rhythm guitar, hand-clappin', boogeyin' piano track, and a scraggly lead vocal that reminds one of an advanced case of laryngitis!
Fine hook — a summer smash prospect. The flowing quality of the tune is emphasized by a lilting string arrangement and a percussive undercurrent. Even outside of the discos, this one is a natural. Wingfield, J. Jammer, D. Harper, G.
LeFleur, N. Should be a hot and nas- ty contender. Hamlisch, E. Lofty, sensuous strings arranged by producer Charlie Calello should make executive producer Mickey Eichner proud — bound to do well pop, mor. Five stars — go with it. Hear that, Cosell? Flip: Rope A Dope Attention PD s — this could be just what your list needs this week.
The vocal is handled with flair over a tight disco beat. Watch for this one to pick up a lot of action. Box, B. Box Originally sung for the film by Seiji Ozawa, Berlin Philharmonic* - Tchaikovsky ;1812; (Vinyl, LP) Rich, Jesse delivers a tender interpretation from a film that has become a family fave.
Flip: Part II. There's a new dimension of emotion and communication in the music that gives the listener the impression that more than a recording session took place this night. Gone, for the most part, is the Heep's penchant for ex- traterrestrial sword and sorcery and in its place are some fine rock and blues "that lady done me wrong" vehicles that suffer nil in the hands of the band. At one time the heavymetal madness of Uriah Heep was rooted in the stars.
The concept of the album is decidedly Beach Boys and walking the nose but the obviousness of their cops serves only to enhance the strength of the music. Spider plays some mean potato salad. And so the addition of Bobby Harrison's emotion drenched vocal chords is a welcome musical drink to any blues thirst. Harrison sings of ex- perience as The Origin of the Lone Ranger - Brace Beemer - The Murray Hill Radio Theater Presents: The Lone Rang foray into the upper registers carries with it visions of booze, broads and lessons in life.
Well, take heart for this ice age is over. And they didn't get that way by recycling what came before, Album). They're experi- menters; twisting and molding the basics of the music into something totally new. In retrospec- tive this best of offering traces the band, in a most effective manner, from their most humble beginnings to their present state of musical mind. The Very Best Of Poco is a good Album) to know.
The best argument in the world for recap- turing the past. The true masters of the medium have proven to be Fairport Convention and on "Rising For The Moon" the band continues to explore the numer- ous byways that the music entails. Fairport Convention is a part of the past that belongs in your present. Her bluesy odes to life and hard knocks go beyond the mere telling of a tale. It takes more than a pass- ing interest to turn out music with punch and just plain high energy.
Well, based on this debut Capitol disk, Ms. Her vocals pass through layers of raw emotion as she strains for every ounce of availa- ble substance. Picture further the culmination of this inbreeding of a sound easy on the ears and on the senses. Tag, you're it. Johnny Hodges and Carter share a track with Duke's band, for instance, and Ella sings several cuts with the Ellington band. Music is high standard mainstream jazz with much of offbeat interest to satisfy the heaviest of collectors.
Kuhn's acoustically textured com- positions are finely crafted and rounded out by his multi-rhythm riffs. His improvisational breaks show some inspired soloing with excellent sup- port provided by Steve Swallow, bass, Jack DeJohnette, drums, and Sue Evans, percussion, who adds a sparkling quality to the music. Brand's style is both rhythmic and percussive. The monumental building process applied to "Tuesday Morning" proves Kossoff's vehicle as his runs pull a regular, tight construction of sound.
The answer, of course, is a bit of both and a lot of something new. Cale is the master of the musical tale and through an eerie all encompass- ing aura he manages to slip some beauties between the lines. It has a habit of sneaking up on you. Veteran Accept - Restless And Wild (CD, Album) Andre Previn derives full impact from the Lon- don Symphony Orchestra as the latent power and emotion of each composition is brought to the fore.
The music, based on a radio serial by Martin, is a forceful, free-blowing excursion which evokes the other-worldly tale. The two musicians com- bine electronic and feedback discords to create a foreboding undercurrent over which Surman's sop sax and Martin's battery of drums take flight. Klaxon metronomes and several synthesizers are employed to add muscle to their sound which is, by itself, already a series of brash, uncom- promising statements. The empathy between the musicians established here provides a buoyant setting.
The bonus tracks from both discs are taken from the Sanctuary Deluxe editions of the first three Black Sabbath records. For anyone who has not bought these please do so, immediately. All three sets come with a bonus disc of each song in an alternate form, lots of different lyrics and instrumental versions.
The packaging on each set is great with a treasure trove of eye candy along with informative booklets, all three releases are must haves. The sound quality is certainly better than what is found on the Hound Dawg release, clear with a much warmer sound.
The tri gatefold packaging features a cover based upon the Master Of Reality record as well as posed shots and a great live photo of a young looking Sabbath and there are accurate liner notes by the impeccable Paul De Luxe.
